What Can Parents Do to Help Their Kids Through Middle School?
We are in the middle...students should be becoming independent learners but there is a wide range of readiness. Some parents must be on top of their child's education, others do not seem to have to worry. You have to decide where you child is and take appropriate action. Throughout the year teachers might recommend something specific for your child, but here are some thoughts from the staff at Superior. We hope you find them helpful!
A) Talk to your son/daughter about their goals and how they are going to attain them.
B) Talk about choices, responsibilities, rights and consequences, honesty and being kind to others less fortunate.
C) Be caught reading and try to catch your son/daughter reading. Talk about their books.
D) Ask if your son/daughter thanked the supervisor(s) after each outing.
E) Do not spend a lot of money on fancy attire for the dances (including the year-end dance. No limos :) Our theme for the year-end dance will be announced at a later date.
F) Have your child dressed modestly and for the work environment--not for dating nor for the beach
G)Ensure names are clearly marked on sneakers, binders, etc. with durable markers.
H) Encourage your son/daughter to be responsible with their belongings. Check our lost and found while visiting the school--much is lost, found and not picked up.
I) Come to the parent/teacher/student nights
J) Check your child's agendas for upcoming events and for procedures, outlines of awards, and other information.
K) Write notes for your child's absences and for any changes in bus stops/routes. Bus passes are required for any changes for safety reasons.
L) Write a note to the home room teacher to inform us about any medicine requirements.
M) Write a note for the administration if you wish your teen to be permitted to go somewhere other than home at 2-3 PM--Once going somewhere else, a student must take the bus home.
N) Ask if your son/daughter signed out when leaving for any reason during the day.
O) Check the agendas nightly to see what is coming up and how they are learning to organize themselves
P) Pay student fees and help in the Citrus/Cookie and Muffin fundraiser. The dollars are spent on student activities and awards/medals... so success is important!
Q) Occasionally check scribblers for organization... and help in the reorganization.
R) Ask for test results.
S) **If planning to volunteer in our school... and there are opportunities--please ensure to ask us about Policy 701. http://www.cnbb.nb.ca/701
T) Out of courtesy to the supervisors, be on time to pick up students after any activity.
